Sandy Level / Sandy Land School
Sandy Level School was a one-room schoolhouse for white students in the Gill’s Creek district of Franklin County. The school was built with a concrete foundation, and it was heated with a stove. It did not have electricity, running water, or indoor restrooms. Clemmie Brown and Ada Wray were teachers at the school. Note that the Virginia State Planning Board referred to the school as “Sandy Level” in 1935, and the USGS referred to it as “Sandy Land” in 1951.
