Callaway School
Callaway High School was a modern schoolhouse for white students located in the Blackwater district of Franklin County. It was built on a concrete foundation in 1921, and it contained at least 9 rooms. Unlike most schools in Franklin County, it was heated with a boiler, had indoor plumbing, and it was wired for electricity by the 1930s. Ardeen Layman Akers, D. A. Justus, Ruth Hunt, Eunance Naff, Jack Renick, Gladys Scott, C. B. Hopkins, Virgie Prillaman, Annie Wray, Ruth Robertson, and Frances Layman all served as teachers at the school.
