Lanahan School

The original Lanahan School was a one-room schoolhouse for white students near the Waidsboro community in western Franklin County. It served students until the mid-1930s, when it was replaced by the “new” Lanahan School. The new two-room schoolhouse was built with a concrete foundation, and it was heated with a stove. It did not have electricity, running water, or indoor restrooms. It operated as a school until 1963. One can still visit the well-maintained schoolhouse at its current location (across from Bowling’s Hot Dog Stand) on Rte. 40 West. Lora Cundiff, Ruby Divers, Bess Hale, Alvarez McGuffin, Betty Worley, Nancy Prillaman, Gladys Robertson, Lera Smith, Pearl Stanley, Essie Thornton, and Nancy Sloan were teachers at the school.
